Reading Counts
Reading Counts is an independent reading program 3rd grade students participate in. This is worth 20% of their final reading grade each 9 weeks. Students are assigned a reading lexile range to choose books from. This is a level that is comfortable for students to read and be successful. All of the books in our classroom library and school library contain a lexile. This makes it easy for students to choose books to read. Along with a lexile, all books are worth a particular number of points. At the beginning of each 9 weeks students will be assigned a point goal. It is their responsibility to read the books and take the comprehension tests on their books to meet their goal.
If you want to see if the book your child is reading has a reading counts test associated with it OR how many points a certain book is worth you can look it up here:http://src.scholastic.com/bookexpert//default.asp?UID=C6630B1E6500415509650EAAD714B499&subt=0&Test=NA

Reading Response / Homework
Reading Response
Students will have reading homework each night. They must read 30 minutes per night. This reading can be anything that is of interest to your child, however it is preferred that is is on their Reading Counts Lexile level. After reading students will need to complete their reading response. In their homework folder you will find a page with reading response and spelling word choices. They will complete a journal entry for what they read that night. There are choices on the reading bingo for Fiction and Nonfiction books. If they read a fiction book and read the first chapter, they will need to pick one box that is labeled fiction and answer the question in a paragraph based on chapter 1.
For Example: Fiction: Are you like the main charater in the book?
Yes I am like Amelia because I am a teacher. Teaching is fun to me just like it is to Amelia. Sometimes I make mistakes when doing something, but not usually as crazy as Amelia. We both like working with children.
